Equipped with 18 programmable buttons, all on the left side, this keyboard is ready to handle just about any.
Using the Logitech G11
Although you would think that a keyboard with a normal typing area wouldn’t require a learning curve, the G11’s extra set of keys to the left of the typing area would often lure us to mis-position our hands on the keyboard. Even our beloved Ctrl key, which would normally be at the bottom left of the keyboard, could be confused with one of the G keys when you’re not looking. Since using a keyboard has become almost second nature to most of us, these errors are forced by our own habits and had to be consciously avoided.
The keys have a solid, positive tactile feel, with a bit of a clicky feeling, but not like those old IBM keyboards. We really like the volume knob at the top of the keyboard. It’s an easier way to adjust your volume compared with a two-button volume control.
In dark settings, we were pleased to find that the blue backlit keys were very easy to spot. The multimedia controls at the top of the keyboard are the most illuminated. This can be quite the lifesaver for some of you who play games during those late hours. If you need more colors, one of our most recent keyboard reviews was the which can illuminate with three separate colors.
Macros
The main attraction of the G11 is its dedicated area of “G” keys, which, along with three modes to switch from, allows for up to 54 macros to be recorded. Without these keys, the G11 is simply a keyboard that glows.

The macro feature is governed by Logitech’s G-series Keyboard Profiler software. In this program, you can assign shortcuts, macros, and keystrokes quickly and easily, as well as keep tabs on what each key does. We found these macro keys very useful during web production, as we are often required to type in a bunch of boring code repeatedly. We would like to see Logitech include a feature where you can print out a small template of these macro keys as a reminder. With the possibility of creating many macros, it can get confusing remembering what all those keys and key combinations do.

You can also record macros on the fly. All you have to do is press the Macro Record button, press one of the G keys, hit your set of keys, and then press the Macro Record button again. A great feature is that macros can be recorded in real-time, meaning that it can record pauses or delays between your keypresses. This is very important in games like MMOs where you are required to wait before performing another action, such as when using abilities.

If you want to record delays, be sure to select the “Record delays during quick macro creation” box in the profiler options. It defaults to recording macros without any delay, defeating this purpose. We found it best to record macros in the macro program for just keystrokes and quick commands without delay, while allowing the quick macro record feature to play back macros with delay. Continued…
